Question by Ash: Is it possible to to install Win vista and upgrade to 7 with an existing product key?
Is it possible to to install Win vista and upgrade to 7 with an existing product key?
I recently attempted to reset my laptop to factory settings. I created a system image on to a dvd, performed a backup on to an external hard drive and saved any important files separately.
Now when i turn it on after the Compaq logo it says bootmgr missing Ctrl Alt Del to restart. In the system menu i have attempted to restore and there seems to be no backup or restore points. I have managed to use the system image disk to get past the bootmgr point, but still i hit a brick wall when it comes to finding any data that i can use to restore windows 7. Is it possible to either backup vista from another laptop (although the vista home premium doesnt seem to be able to perform a complete pc backup), restore mine with that data, and upgradre to windows 7 with the product key from my laptop, or, upgrade the other laptop to windows 7with that key and then create a system image to restore my laptop?
Sorry a bit long winded but other than buy the system restore disks from windows i wondered if anybody had any tips?
In reply to David. It is my girlfriends laptop that has vista but i cant copy a system image from that and i cant even get my laptop past the recovery menu stage so how am i able to upgrade it.
Just to make it clear if i can do this, is it possible to tell me which way is best and if i need to install vista on to my laptop how to i get a system image off the laptop that is currently running vista. All details are up there if you need to know about the problem i am asking help for.
