I had Windows 7 installed on my old HDD and unfortunately it died. So after the RMA process is over, I was issued with a new HDD (not technically brand new, just a different working one) by Seagate. My question is: Should I install Windows 7 using the same product key first and then give Microsoft a call or contact Microsoft first before any installation? Also, does it matter either way?

Use the same key. If you are only changing the drive it should work with no problems. As long as you are using the original version that matches your key.
