Can you help me with economising Microsoft Office?

Question by Debbie: Can you help me with economising Microsoft Office?

I’ve just bought a new laptop and have one month’s trail for Microsoft Office 2010. The activation key costs about £100, which is out of the question at the moment. So, for you techies out there, here are a few questions. Does it matter which version of Office I use? On eBay people are selling Office 2003 for a fraction of the price. If I buy an older version on CD, will my computer allow it to be installed and operate, even though I have Office 2010 downloaded already?

I know that there is freeware out there that works as well as Office but I really do need a version of the real thing.

Any help you can offer would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks so much for your time.

Yes, it will work for you. You are first going to want to uninstall the Microsoft Office 2010 version so it doesn’t conflict. Then once it is gone you can install the Office 2003 version and download the compatibility pack so that you can open/edit any newer Office 2010 files that you may encounter. Also, make sure you have the latest service pack for Office 2010. This website has the service pack and the compatibility pack for you to download and install.
